Style and Register
Your English should be adapted so that the vocabulary and grammar you use are appropriate for the current situation, target group, etc. Distinguish between the following categories:
- Informal (e.g. communicating with friends)
- Neutral (e.g. articles in a newspaper)
- Formal/Academic (e.g. research papers)
In short, here is what you should know when producing a formal/academic text:
- Vocabulary: do not use slang or colloqualisms.
- Vocabulary: replace certain words/phrases with more formal ones (ask your teacher for examples and see links below).
- You will often want to avoid phrasal verbs.
- Do not use contractions.
- Do not use abbreviations, or write the first instance in full.
- The passive form is often more suitable than the active form.
- You will often want to avoid personal pronouns.
